Stormwater Quality Leadership Program
Campus Improvement Projects
Through this program, students in grades 5-12 develop real-world skills while using math, science and teamwork to make meaningful environmental improvements to their own school site.
Educators facilitating the secondary-level program are also eligible to earn professional development credit through the University of Massachusetts Global by completing our Stormwater Quality Leadership for Educators course alongside the program (learn more here).
Best Management Practices
The outcome of each program is a set of improvements, known in the industry as Best Management Practices or BMPs, implemented by the students to either physically reduce stormwater pollution originating from their school site or to encourage behavioral change in the community.
Source Control BMPs
This type of BMP refers to solutions that have the ability to stop or reduce pollution at their source before they enter the catch basin and drainage system, typically educational.
Treatment Control BMPs
This type of BMP involves physical solutions that can reduce or stop pollution from entering the drainage system.
Examples of BMPs students have implemented in our Stormwater Quality Leadership Program include:
- Stickers
- Yard Signs
- Drain Murals
- City Resolution
- Drain Stencils
- Bioretention Basins
- Drain Improvements
- Student-Led Outreach
- Campus Flyers and Events
Explore some of their BMP projects here.
